Cleopatra
08:15
|
|||
cleopatra, take a ride
in my well-appointed ship
it waits with painted sails to receive
let your imagination glide
and your apprehension slip
as the river surrenders to the sea
the sky is blue and wide
the sea is soft and still
we'll find a sheltered cove to lay anchor
then beneath a spray of stars
we'll make love until the dawn
reveals its golden answer
cleopatra, take a ride
let me hear your dark voice whisper
an egyptian melody
the oars will dip and slide
through the warm turquoise water
of this picture-perfect sea
your teeth, a string of pearls
your eyes, two crescent moons
your lips, an exquisite fragrant flower
we'll drift between these long deserted islands
where the ghosts of phoenicians
count the hours
cleopatra, take a ride
we'll rest upon the shore
set your feet upon the burning sand
with all your senses tingling
your black skin glistening
feel the touch of this soldier's hand
cleopatra, take a ride
cleopatra, you are wise
there are dangers to consider
together, we shall overcome them all
we'll stop the heavens turning
quench the flames of judgment burning
and kiss, as empires fall

Two Old Crows
04:10
|
|||
beneath the desert sun
half past noon, maybe quarter to one
next to a dead man in a ditch by the side of the road
two old crows
in dusty, black, raggedy clothes
engaged in philosophical to and fro…
said Punch to the one,
“I do believe this world is coming undone
all i can see is ruin coming down”
Clarity replied,
“you take the boots, Punch, I’ll take the eyes
and maybe some solution can be found”
and way up high
above the vultures circling in the sky
an eagle looked down with his one good eye
later on that night
Clarity had visions of darkness and light
all the people and places the eyes had seen
and Punch, he talked
of all the dusty roads the man had walked
before he died of thirst in a desert ravine
- - -
the newspapers said
a man was found in the desert, dead
it looked as tho vultures had plucked out his eyes
and his feet were bare
no tire tracks or footprints anywhere
as if he’d fallen straight out of the sky
and by the side of the road
in black top hats and shiny new clothes
two old crows…
and way up high
above the clouds, near the roof of the sky
an eagle looks down with his one good eye

Old Man On The Porch
05:01
|
|||
the leaves are due to turn again
another summer bound to end
and i think i know the answer to your riddle
old man on the porch playing that fiddle
life is such a strange parade
it's hard to tell what part you played
apprentice, master, fool, or thief
claim to know what begs belief
the might have, could and should have beens
and harder still, surrendering
throw your stone so it makes no ripple
old man on the porch playing that fiddle
if i'd known then what i know now
i wouldn't worry so much about the whys and hows
the friends and lovers and the paths i chose
doors will open, doors will close
i wouldn't take so much and give so little
old man on the porch playing that fiddle
some will smile, some will dance
some may never get the chance
some stay a while, others travel on
some gotta push, others must be drawn
some fly with wings above the clouds
some get lost among the crowd
some plant the seed, others help it grow
some scrape the strings with a broken bow
and i think i know the answer to your riddle
old man on the porch playing that fiddle
throw your stone so it makes no ripple
old man on the porch playing that fiddle

Where Monsters Wait
05:05
|
|||
in a caravel we crossed gibraltar’s strait
we hugged the coast off tangier
to cabo bojador, where monsters wait
beyond all pain and fear
to map the kingdom of Prester John
and the fabled rivers of gold
the boiling sea made a nightmare sound
the waves they rose as if in flame
the wind it howled with a thousand mouths
and screamed each sailor’s name
how our captain wept when we spied dry land
and turned the ship toward the shore
then i awoke to the sound of iron bells
borne along these streets paved with gold
of all onboard, only i survived to tell
how the ship was wrecked on the shoals
so with my dying breath, i deliver greetings from
the Navigator Prince to Prester John

Iron Range
04:50
|
|||
when the dust has settled on the century
and there’s nowhere left to roam
and the wind, it echoes with its own blowing
the sirens call ulysses home
to the iron range
to the iron range
i lost my ticket on the platform
just as the moon began to rise
the station master, lost in laughter
until he lifted up his eyes
to the iron range
to the iron range
the rusted remains of two harbors
that once fed upon the head of truth
the highway splits off from the river
far from the birthplace of the blues
to the iron range
to the iron range
lashed to the mast of the distant past
when you knew just who your enemies were
but ever since the fall, it’s too close to call
and all you can think about is her…
they say you met her accidentally
her beauty blunted all your words
then from the highlands to the lowlands
you chased her like a fleeting bird
to the iron range
to the iron range
now the trojan armies are defeated
and whiskey row’s been left to burn
they say the circus will soon be closing
and all the blind poets must return
to the iron range
to the iron range

Passed Pawn
05:11
|
|||
feels like slow motion - - flash in yr eyes
hit with precision - - a total eclipse
no more decision - - yield to the signs
yr caught in the rain in the middle of nowhere
praying for a ride
seems the impossible has come home to roost
suddenly logical - - beyond all proof
that’s when you realize - - slap in the face
that all roads only lead
to right where you are
outside yr window, sirens and lights
ask you yr name and the day of the week
bishop preventing any white square retreat
rook is closing in on yr file
knight to e5 - - you are suddenly pinned
and with the advance of the passed pawn
you might as well
resign

Northern Lights
06:43
|
|||
they say tonight's a good night
for watching falling stars
but where i live the clouds hang low
that's just the way things are
i want to hold you in my arms
and spend my nights with you
will you be dreaming of me
while i'm dreaming of you?
up and down this old highway
singing the blues
i get so tired of the same old songs
but what you gonna do?
sometimes i think i'll drive straight on
'til this life's a memory
put all this confusion, pain
and trouble behind me
i want to live where the northern lights
will dance and shine over me
whitehorse, maybe yellowknife
it doesn't matter to me
where the sun never rises
i'll find eternity
see them shimmer in the atmosphere
in cold tranquility
i'm laying here awake again
thinking of your smile
you're letting down your hair
saying "please, just stay a while"
there's danger in admitting
what we both know to be true
but how will i keep holding on
after letting go of you
i want to live where the northern lights
will dance and shine over me
whitehorse, or yellowknife
it makes no difference to me
where the sun never rises
my soul will be set free
see them shimmer in the atmosphere
in cold tranquility

Echo Of A Train
08:57
|
|||
i hear the echo of a train
in the middle of the night
i hear the echo of a train
in the middle of the night
i’m awake in my bed
still hours before morning’s light
the city’s finally quiet
even the dogs have gone to sleep
i can hear the stars whispering
all the secrets they claim to keep
the moon turns a blind eye
while lonely women weep
i said goodbye to all my friends
forget you ever knew my face
all good things must come to an end
we’ll meet again in some better place
i ain’t gonna run no more, no more
in this goddamned human race
got to get my head together
you know there’s only so much time
been too long in the valley
so many mountains left to climb
i’m pinned to the bed i made
and it keeps preying on my mind
i’ve got to stop thinking about you
before i finally go insane
accept that my desires
they were born to live in vain
was that the sound of my heart breaking
or just the echo of a train
