Kimberly Smith I have been a fan of Caleb's guitar playing since I first heard him. The Long Dark Road is a perfectly balanced set of thought provoking lyrics and virtuoso guitar performances. The production is beautifully clear and artfully mixed. Great album.

Track Name: Winter Song
will the winter never end
snow keeps fall-falling down
be nice to see the sun again
feel the green grass on the ground

i remember your funny smile
when you knew only i would see
know that it might be a while
before you see a smile from me

maybe i’ll see clear again
break through this ice-bound year, and then
i’ll find the sweet thing i’m missing

abandon ship, clear the decks
don’t want to hear no more bad news
sing a new song with no train wrecks
a deviation from the blues

maybe i’ll break free again
and shine my light through tears, and then
i’ll find the sweet thing i’m missing
Track Name: Killin' Time
the sun come up - - the sun go down
and just like a wheel it all comes back around
and that’s all right - - there’s reason in the rhyme
and if one thing is true we all get the blues
sometime.

the wind blows east - - the wind blows west
you took what you wanted and left me the rest
and that’s all right - - it’s just nickels and dimes
you win and you lose and we all get the blues
sometime.

do what you say, say what you do
you got your troubles, baby, i got them too
you’re pointing the finger, you’re naming names
if a crime was committed ain’t we all to blame?

seconds to minutes, hours to days
seasons to years, they all slip away
rain to the river, river to the sea
you’ll never know just what you meant to me
but that’s all right - - we were just killin’ time
some things you choose but we all get the blues
sometime.
Track Name: Downhill Slide
river red and swollen
the preacher man was right
the bitter seed you planted
has flowered in your sight
for judgment you stand naked
in revelation’s light
so put on your crash helmet
it’s gonna be one hell of a ride
you scratched and clawed to get where you are
now you’re headed for the downhill slide.

all you took for granted
has now been stripped away
there’s nothing left to salvage
from the dreams of yesterday
your hole’s too deep to dig out of
try as you may
so fill your mouth with sugar
you’re gonna have to swallow your pride
just when you thought you had it all sewn up
now you’re headed for the downhill slide.

your children they resent you
for the misery of their lives
the woman you love she don’t love you no more
and neither does your wife
you look outside your window
all you see is struggle and strife
so put on your safety glasses
the flash is gonna be bright
you lived so long on this razor’s edge
now you’re headed for the downhill slide.
Track Name: World Keeps Spinning
everybody’s running ‘round in circles
they like to think they keep one step ahead
crying ‘bout the weight that’s on their shoulders
when everybody’s fate hangs from a thread.

rich man grinning counting up his pennies
poor man in the street he’s begging bread
the wishes of the few dictate the many
remember what your prophet said?

and the world keeps spinning ‘round...

judge he tells his version of the story
jury sit and smile without a sound
witness stake his claim to fame and glory
guilty party nowhere to be found.

and the world keeps spinning ‘round...

you may have some fatal expectations
you may have some heavy dues to pay
but now is not the time for hesitation
or wondering why things have to be this way.

‘cause everybody’s running ‘round in circles
they like to think they keep one step ahead
crying ‘bout the weight that’s on their shoulders
when everybody’s fate hangs by a thread.
Track Name: Wrong Address Blues
woke up this morning with the blues knocking at my door
woke up this morning with the blues knocking at my door
i said “i didn’t send for sadness, tell me what you come here for?”

i work long and i work hard and most times i’ve been good
i work long and i work hard and most times i’ve been good
blues got the address wrong or the time misunderstood

he said “the rain will find the river, the river will find the sea,
the rain will find the river, the river will find the sea,
it’s just your turn to suffer, pack your bag and come with me”

well, i got me a good little girl, she won’t understand
said i got me a good little girl, she won’t understand
he said “i know that no-good woman, right now she’s with some other man!”

i’m gonna write me a letter, gonna mail it to my home town
write me a letter, send it back to my home town
might not say where i’m going, but i sure won’t be hanging ‘round.
Track Name: Broken Pieces
deer tracks in the snow
all the time in the world, nowhere to go
i look in the mirror, what do i see
all the broken pieces of me...

you know i crossed that great divide
but i was only along for the ride
from an airplane window looking down at the sea
and all the broken pieces of me...

buried ‘neath the desert sand
are sailing ships built by unknown hands
for the tide they wait so patiently
all things return, eventually...

like a scratched old record my skipping heart
only gets so far then back to the start
but the tune stays in my memory
with all the broken pieces of me...

you know i always cared for you
your brave ideas, your shifting point of view
you taught me to listen and you taught me to see
all the broken pieces of me...

i didn’t want to bring you down
i only came to call, i won’t stick around
each moment is precious and the past is through
and i’m just another broken piece of you...

deer tracks in the snow
all the time in the world, nowhere to go
Track Name: Girl From Tunis
just when he thought he’d convinced himself to believe
that perfection was a trick of the mind, the heart to deceive
there she stood - - proof of all he had missed
the mind’s eye could not conjure this
with raven black hair - - there stood the girl from tunis.

just when he thought what was left must somehow be right
just when he’d crossed from true darkness into false light
there she stood - - her eyes, two black desert suns
she was ever the one
with teeth white as pearls - - there stood the girl from tunis.

in midnight he lies alone unable to sleep
his heart like carthage in ruins, ashes piled in a heap
there she stood - - somebody mentioned her name
he’ll never see her again
but he’d trade the world for a glimpse of the girl from tunis.
Track Name: Satya
(When I was mixing this instrumental piece, I was having a hard time hearing what was coming out of the speakers due to the light rain and hummingbirds outside the open windows. But I liked the way it all sounded, so I set up a couple mics and recorded the rain, the hummingbirds, and later that evening the little peeper frogs, and mixed them all together into a sonic snapshot of that day.)
Track Name: Last Call
miles to go - - nothing to lose
holes in the soles of your walking shoes
right about now you feel your faith’s been shaken
come as you are to the bar of the lost and forsaken.

tears and regret - - you’ve had your fill
if death don’t get you then living will
don’t even mention the time that it’s taken
time passes slow at the bar of the lost and forsaken.

the clock keeps ticking, you can’t fall asleep
the dreams you let fly and the nightmares you keep
we all wear the mask, we all pretend we’re not faking
we’ve saved you a seat at the bar of the lost and forsaken.

the clock keeps ticking, you can’t fall asleep
the dreams you let fly and the nightmares you keep
you might think that you’re alone, but you’d be mistaken
we’re packing them in at the bar of the lost and forsaken.

you ask for selection - - man, you got nerve!
‘cause bitter dregs is all that we serve
but there’s plenty of friends here for the making
come raise your glass at the bar of the lost and forsaken.
Track Name: Long Dark Road
well, all congratulations
you were the best you could be
you made your destination
a home of light and harmony
but it’s a distance further
to the place that waits for me

i’m not one to claim
false triumph as my own
or waste breath dropping names
i’ve burned my bridges all alone
and it’s a long dark road
that takes me home

i’m glad to be of service
tho i wonder where you’ll be
will you return the favor
when it comes time to rescue me?
only time will tell
and this time is telling me

worried mind and snow blind
fifty miles still to go
may short climbs and good times
be all you ever know
and it’s a long dark road, it’s a long dark road
that takes me home.
